The Garden Gathering

A charming mid-century figurative landscape painting capturing a leisurely afternoon gathering in a lush, sun-drenched garden, painted in oil by Swedish artist Eric Elfvén (1921–2008), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Jönköping Museum, Borås Art Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Four figures sit comfortably around a white garden table beneath the shade of a canopy swing, surrounded by dense, verdant foliage. The relaxed postures and intimate arrangement of the figures evoke a sense of quiet companionship, nostalgia and the simple pleasures of outdoor living.

Painted in a distinctly modernist style, the composition embraces simplified forms, loose outlines and expressive brushwork. The figures are rendered with minimal facial detail, allowing their gestures and the interplay of colour to convey the atmosphere of the scene. Broad, confident brushstrokes and visible layers of paint lend the work a lively, painterly quality.

A rich palette of emerald, olive and forest greens dominates the surrounding landscape, punctuated by deep blue and violet shadows. Soft pastel hues of powder blue, dusty pink, lavender and warm peach bring warmth to the figures, while the crisp whites and pale creams of the canopy and garden furniture provide a striking contrast against the darker foliage. The artist’s loose, textured brushwork creates a wonderful sense of movement and depth, particularly in the surrounding greenery.

This oil on board is presented in a complementary slim gilt frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some scuffs to its corners.
