The Distant Trees

A serene mid-century landscape depicting a broad expanse of open countryside beneath a luminous, pale blue sky, executed in oil onto board and dated 1965.

The composition is arranged in long horizontal bands, with sweeping fields stretching towards a distant horizon. A compact cluster of trees rises prominently in the distance, providing a strong focal point amid the otherwise open and tranquil landscape.

Painted in a restrained modernist style, the artist simplifies the countryside into flattened planes of colour and loosely defined forms. Rather than pursuing precise naturalistic detail, the landscape is conveyed through shape, rhythm and tonal variation, giving the work a wonderfully atmospheric quality. The elongated panoramic format further emphasises the sense of space and distance.

The palette is particularly appealing, dominated by soft turquoise, seafoam green, sage, muted olive and creamy beige, with deeper forest-green passages introducing contrast and depth. The cool, harmonious colours lend the scene a fresh and calming character.

Brushwork is loose, expressive and visibly textured throughout. Broad lateral strokes sweep across the fields and sky, reinforcing the horizontal structure of the composition, while the trees are rendered with shorter, more energetic marks and layered touches of green and turquoise. Areas of exposed texture and softly blended pigment add to the painting’s distinctly mid-century character.

This oil on board is presented in a complementary silver-toned wood frame with an inner linen lining. Both the painting and frame aer in excellent vintage condition.
