A playful and wonderfully characterful interior scene depicting a figure stretched comfortably across a sofa while a cat sleeps contentedly beneath, executed in oil onto board and dated 1991.

Surrounded by patterned cushions, a glowing table lamp and familiar domestic objects, the composition captures an intimate moment of everyday leisure with warmth, humour and a strong sense of personality.

Painted in a naïve, folk-inspired expressionist style, the work favours storytelling and decorative detail over conventional perspective. Bold black outlines give the figures and furnishings an almost illustrative quality, while exaggerated proportions and flattened forms lend the scene its distinctive charm. The painted frame is cleverly incorporated into the composition, extending the interior beyond the traditional picture plane.

The palette is warm and earthy, dominated by dusty rose, sage and muted olive green, cream, soft brown and touches of black, with small white dotted accents enlivening the surrounding pink walls. The brushwork is expressive and deliberately loose, combining broad areas of colour with finer linear marks, stippling and scratched or drawn details. Layers of visible texture and irregularly worked surfaces enhance the painting’s handcrafted, whimsical character.

This oil on board is presented in a substantial painted wooden frame with stepped, moulded detailing, that is intentionally integrated with the artwork. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some scuff marks.
