Spanish Afternoon

SOLD.

A brilliantly executed semi-abstract oil composition, painted in 1958 by the established Swedish artist Ivar Morsing (1919-2009), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the National Museum in Stockholm, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Kalmar Museum, and Jönköping Museum.

The composition presents 2 figures strolling through the Old Town of Altea in Spain. Painted in a semi-abstract style, the artist’s deliberate omission of realistic details encourages viewers to focus on the overall atmospheric ambiance, as well as on brushstroke and colour.

The artist has used short and expressive brushstrokes, evoking a sense of movement and dynamism within the static setting. The dominant use of rich brown tones in various intensities creates a warm and earthy atmosphere, imbuing the artwork with a timeliness quality. The variations in the brown hues and injections of white and black in contrasting colour blocks help to create depth and three-dimensionality.

This oil on board is is housed in a very lovely dark wood frame with an inner gilt window.  Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
