Sculpted by Nature

A captivating mid-century abstract painting that explores the beauty of organic form through a restrained, earthy palette and richly textured brushwork, executed in oil onto canvas.

At the centre of the composition, an elongated, sculptural form rises against a soft ivory background. Its irregular contours and intricate folds evoke the natural textures of weathered wood, tree bark or an abstracted botanical structure, inviting the viewer to discover familiar shapes within its ambiguity.

Executed in a distinctly expressive, almost sculptural style, the painting embraces elements of Abstract Expressionism and organic abstraction. A sophisticated palette of muted sage green, olive, warm grey and creamy white is punctuated by subtle touches of charcoal and earthy brown, creating a harmonious interplay of colour and texture.

The artist’s confident application of thick, impasto brushstrokes lends the composition a remarkable sense of depth and movement. Sweeping, directional strokes follow the contours of the central form, while densely layered passages of paint create intricate ridges and tactile surfaces. The contrast between these expressive textures and the surrounding smooth, neutral background enhances the painting’s quiet yet striking presence.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary simple wood frame. The painting has small areas of craquelure present, but the paint layer is in stable condition. The frame has some scuffs, consistent with age.
