Room with a View

A charming mid-century interior that balances the intimacy of a domestic setting with a glimpse of the world beyond, executed in oil onto board.

The composition centres on a simply dressed table, upon which a single red-orange fruit rests, while an open doorway or window to the left reveals neighbouring rooftops, trees and architecture. A vivid red vessel on the sill provides a second small but striking focal point, drawing the eye outward into the distant view.

The painting has a distinctly modernist sensibility, with the interior pared back into broad, flattened planes and simplified geometric forms. Much of the composition is given over to the pale wall, creating a wonderful sense of openness and stillness. The cropped architectural elements and slightly unconventional proportions lend the scene an almost abstract quality, while the everyday objects give it warmth and familiarity.

The palette is beautifully restrained, dominated by chalky whites, pale cream, powder blue, soft grey and muted green, punctuated by the jewel-like reds of the fruit and vase. These small flashes of saturated colour animate an otherwise cool and contemplative composition.

Paint has been applied with soft brushwork, with areas of visible texture and gently worked colour preventing the larger expanses from feeling flat. The exterior view is handled more loosely, with small, expressive strokes suggesting foliage and architectural detail rather than describing them precisely. There is a lovely naivety to the execution that complements the painting’s modernist character.

This oil on board is presented in a complementary gilt frame. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
