Out of the Woods

SOLD.

A brilliantly executed modernist landscape painting, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1952.

Simple yet effective in its composition, the artist has crafted a captivating depiction of a pathway meandering through a landscape adorned with lush trees.

Drawing inspiration from cubism and abstraction, the artist skilfully employs black lines throughout the composition to accentuate the three-dimensionality of the scene. These lines serve as delineations, creating a visual structure that emphasises the various elements within the landscape.

The artwork is characterised by a muted and limited palette, primarily consisting of green, brown, and blue shades to evoke a serene ambiance. The deliberate choice to limit the colour range allows viewers to focus on the interplay of lines and expressive brushstrokes, and the use of tonal variations creates a sense of depth and perspective.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary gilt frame with slim inner linen border. There is a tiny spot of paint loss to the right of the painting, as shown in the close up. Otherwise, both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
