Misty Harbour

A serene and ephemeral mid-century harbour scene depicting a small gathering of sailboats resting on calm, reflective waters, executed in oil onto canvas.

Positioned towards the lower portion of the composition, the boats and their slender masts emerge softly from the surrounding mist, while a low, tree-covered shoreline appears in the distance. The expansive open sky gives the work a wonderful sense of stillness and space.

Painted in a restrained modernist style, the artist reduces the landscape to its essential forms, allowing atmosphere and tonal variation to take precedence over fine detail. The muted palette is composed predominantly of soft whites, misty greys and warm stone tones, punctuated by touches of ochre yellow, olive green and earthy brown across the boats and distant foliage.

The brushwork is loose, delicate and wonderfully understated, with thin washes and softly feathered passages creating an almost ethereal quality. Areas of the canvas have been deliberately left sparse, while blurred reflections and lightly drawn vertical masts lend structure to the otherwise diffused composition. The subtle treatment of light gives the scene the feeling of a harbour glimpsed through early morning mist.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary slim gilt frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and there is a scratch to the bottom right corner of the frame.
