An exceptional mid century modernist composition in oil, painted on to board.

Swathes of rich, saturated colour connect and intersect to create this striking landscape composition. Using a range of non naturalistic colours to depict the landscape, the artist reduces the scene before him down into shapes, forms and patterns, Realistic details have been intentionally left out, and traditional methods of perspective cast out. Instead, the artist focusses on formal qualities, and uses contrasting colour to create depth and space. Also incorporated into the composition are elements of cubism and abstract patterning.

The painting is housed in a gilt frame with a linen lined border. There is some craquelure (typical for an oil of this age) to the lower half of the painting but the paint surface on the entire composition is very stable. There is some surface wear to the inner edge of the right side of the painting, as shown in the close ups.
