An outstanding mid-century modernist figurative composition, executed in oil onto canvas board.

This painting depicts a female figure cradling a baby in her arms, and is inspired by the historical painting of Madonna and Child.

Containing elements of cubism and abstraction, the painting models the appearance of a stained glass window, whereby the overall composition has been segmented into fragments of different shapes, sizes, and colours.

Using smooth and flat brushstrokes, the artist has painted the blocks in contrasting colours with bold outlines to highlight the three-dimensional qualities of the figures, whilst simultaneously emphasising the two-dimensional flatness of the board.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary wood frame with an inner linen that pairs very well with the painting. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and there are very minor scuffs to the lower edge of the frame.
