Landscape Remembered

A striking mid-century modernist abstract composition, painted in oil onto board by the established Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum.

The composition distils the essence of a landscape into a harmonious arrangement of geometric forms and expressive gestures. Suggestive silhouettes of harbourside buildings and rolling headlands stretch across a broad horizon, while sweeping black marks evoke the movement of seabirds or drifting clouds overhead. Rather than depicting a specific place, the artist captures the memory and atmosphere of a landscape through abstraction.

Rendered in a beautifully restrained palette of warm greys, taupe and charcoal, the composition is enlivened by carefully placed accents of cobalt blue, burnt sienna, ochre, soft sage and pale lemon. These vibrant passages punctuate the muted tones, lending the work a quiet sense of rhythm and vitality without disturbing its overall serenity.

Confident, deliberate brushwork characterises the painting throughout. Crisp, flat planes of colour are balanced by spontaneous gestural strokes, textured impasto passages and exposed painterly marks that reveal the artist’s process. The interplay between controlled geometry and expressive abstraction creates a composition that feels both structured and lyrical.

This oil on board is presented in an elegant linen-lined wood frame with an inner silver window. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some scuffs mainly at the inner section.
