A soothing and brilliantly executed mid-century modernist style townscape, executed in oil onto canvas.

The composition depicts a town in Italy, featuring trees set amidst blocks of buildings.

Drawing on a distinctly modernist ethos, the artist has masterfully reduced the composition down to blocks and planes of contrasting colour, and explores the use of colour and brushstrokes to create a sense of depth and space in this painting.

The use of a gentle and muted colour palette adds an uplifting quality, and another striking aspect of this painting is the artist’s creative use of negative space. By leaving areas of the canvas exposed, the forms of the building and trees are accentuated, drawing our attention to their distinct forms.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary gilt frame with an inner linen lining. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The linen border of the frame has some minor age toning but this is in keeping with its age.
