Houses in Monochrome

SOLD.

A brilliantly executed cubist geometric mid century oil on board, painted in 1962.

Featuring angled shapes with hard edges that slot together seamlessly to form a view of houses, this striking piece encourages us to take in a cityscape through a unique lens. Here we see an interplay between lines, angles, and shapes, where the artist has reduced the buildings down into their simplest forms.

Although the palette is very restrained and almost monochrome, the juxtaposition of light and dark shapes creates the illusion of depth, making it seem as though the buildings in the composition are rising and falling, and receding into space.

This masterful oil composition is framed in its original mid century dark wood frame with an inner linen border. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
