House on the Hill

A large and lively landscape painting that depicts a quiet suburban scene dominated by a white house set against lush greenery and an expansive blue sky, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1985.

The composition is pared back to essential geometric forms – rectangular planes of house, hedge, and pavement, offset by rounded, block-like shapes of trees and bushes. A solitary vertical pole bisects the scene, adding structure and balance.

The style is characteristically modernist, emphasizing abstraction over fine detail. Colours are laid down in broad, flat fields: vivid cobalt blue for the sky, deep greens for the hedges, warm purples and greys for the street and hillside, punctuated by flashes of yellow and red that animate the composition.

The brushstrokes are bold, applied with confident, blocky movements that create a sense of solidity and rhythm rather than illusionistic depth. This restrained yet expressive handling distills the everyday view into a harmonious study of form, colour, and balance.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary slim wood frame. The painting is in good vintage condition – there is some light surface craquelure to the house areas as shown in close ups but the paint layer is very stable.
