Forest Geometry

A brilliantly executed mid-century modernist landscape that reimagines a wooded scene through the lens of abstraction and cubism, painted in oil onto canvas.

The painting depicts a stand of slender trees rising before a distant hillside, their forms fractured into geometric planes and rhythmic verticals. At the composition’s heart, a dark evergreen anchors the scene – its deep green tones contrasting against the softer mosaic of browns, blues, and muted mauves that fill the surrounding terrain.

Through overlapping geometric forms and layered brushstrokes, the artist has constructed the landscape as an interplay of colour and shape rather than a literal depiction of nature. Earthy greens, browns, and yellows are interwoven with muted mauves, cool blues, and touches of rose and teal, creating a sense of quiet motion and depth.

The brushwork is assertive, with visible texture lending a tactile quality to the surface. Planes of colour shift and intersect, capturing the essence of light filtering through trees while also flattening and reordering space — a hallmark of Cubist experimentation.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary gilt frame. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The frame has scuffs and some areas of paint loss.
