Figures in a Sunlit Passage

A small yet very impactful mid century abstract oil composition painted in 1959 by the established Swedish artist Ivar Morsing (1919-2009), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the National Museum in Stockholm, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Kalmar Museum, and Jönköping Museum.

The painting captures a quiet yet evocative street scene, where loosely defined figures gather in the foreground against a simplified architectural backdrop. The figures – suggested rather than detailed – appear clustered in conversation or movement, their forms softened into painterly silhouettes. Behind them, block-like structures hint at buildings or a townscape, rendered with an abstracted geometry that flattens depth while still anchoring the scene.

The style is distinctly modernist, leaning toward abstraction while retaining a figurative essence. The artist prioritises mood and composition over realism, using broad, gestural applications of paint to construct both figure and environment. There is a subtle interplay between structure and spontaneity – buildings are reduced to bold, dark shapes, while the figures dissolve into expressive strokes.

The colour palette is muted yet harmonious, dominated by warm neutrals – beiges, creams, and soft greys – offset by darker charcoal and black forms. Gentle accents of blush pink and pale peach appear in the figures, adding warmth and a human touch, while the sky is rendered in a calm, powdery blue that introduces lightness and balance to the composition.

Brushwork is loose and confident, with visible, textured strokes that vary in opacity. The paint is applied in layered patches, sometimes dry-brushed, creating a softly broken surface that enhances the atmospheric quality. Edges are intentionally blurred or undefined, allowing forms to merge subtly into one another, reinforcing the painting’s impressionistic and contemplative character.

This oil on board is housed complementary slim gilt frame. The painting itself is in excellent vintage condition. There is paint chipped off of the frame, however, this imperfections do not detract from its overall attractiveness of the painting.
