Fields of Colour

A vibrant mid-century abstract landscape, composed through broad, interlocking passages of saturated colour, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1964.

The composition loosely evokes a landscape viewed across rolling fields and distant hills, though the scenery has been deliberately reduced to its most elemental forms. Irregular blocks of colour overlap and recede across the canvas, creating a sense of depth without relying on conventional perspective. The distant blue forms suggest hills or mountains beneath a pale turquoise sky, while the foreground unfolds in a patchwork of fields.

The palette is wonderfully bold and uplifting, bringing together cobalt and powder blue, vivid orange, golden yellow, fresh greens, deep aubergine and warm red, all set against the cool turquoise above. Areas of exposed ground between the colours create pale, broken outlines that further emphasise the individual shapes.

Executed in a distinctly modernist, colour-field style, the artist favours simplified organic forms and expressive areas of flat colour over descriptive detail. The paint has been applied with broad, visible brushstrokes, with uneven, feathered edges lending the composition a spontaneous and tactile quality.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary slim wood frame. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
