Cottage Among the Trees

A soothing semi-abstract mid-century modernist painting that presents a white cottage nestled among trees, executed in oil onto board and dated 1959.

The composition is rendered in a semi-abstract style, where natural forms are simplified into blocks of muted colour. The house, with its pale walls and ochre roof, stands as the focal point, framed by the surrounding foliage and a single bare-branched tree in the foreground.

The palette is restrained and earthy, with soft tones of sage green, olive, beige, brown, and hints of lavender-grey, creating a sense of calm and understated harmony. The sky is suggested with cool, hazy blues, gently diffusing into the treetops.

Executed with bold, textured brushstrokes and areas of impasto, the surface has a tactile quality that emphasises the painter’s hand. Forms are built up in broad, angular strokes, giving the scene a structural yet atmospheric presence. The overall effect is one of quiet modernism – balancing abstraction with recognisable subject matter.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary wood frame with an inner linen border.  Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
