This large and very well executed mid century oil on canvas is particularly reminiscent of the St Ives school of Modern British art. Although Swedish in its provenance, it is likely that the artist was also inspired by the coastal areas of Sweden, just like the St Ives artists were by the British coastal town of St Ives. Although largely abstract in its composition, we can just about discern coastal elements – the lower half of the painting depicts the sandy shore, and in the middle section of blue we see the water as well as the triangular shape of the sail of boat, and finally the light greyish green of the sky. The artist has chosen to focus on the shape, forms, and colours of the coast as his source of inspiration. Even the textural qualities of the painting which includes areas of sgraffito (the technique of scratching the painted surface to reveal the underlying colours and layers) captures the rough and raw quality of the sandy, rocky landscape. The painting also captures the ‘light’ of the coastal area and has a luminosity in its palette and overall appearance.
The canvas is surrounded by slim wood slats, which then sit within an outer white floating box frame. This unique framing suits the piece wonderfully. There is scattered craquelure to the painting as shown in the photos, but the surface is very stable.
