A serene and very pleasant large mid-century modernist painting that presents a distilled suburban scene rendered in confident, simplified forms, executed in oil onto board and dated 1955.
A row of neatly ordered conifers frames the background, echoing the vertical rhythm of white chimneys rising from geometric rooftops. The houses are flattened into clean, angular planes, their shadows creating a dynamic interplay between structure and space.
The artist has used a controlled, muted palette – dusty olive greens, blues, and soft greys – punctuated by gentle pops of yellow and red flowers in the foreground. the brushwork is smooth and deliberate, favouring blocks of colour over texture, evoking a sense of calm and order. The composition masterfully balances abstraction and representation, capturing a tranquil, idealised view of domestic architecture.
This large oil on board is housed in a very well-suited wood frame with visible grain and an inner linen lining. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.Â
