Blue Flowers in the Meadow

A very pleasant mid-century landscape depicting a scattering of delicate blue wildflowers rising across an open meadow beneath an expansive, softly rendered sky, executed in oil onto canvas.

The flowers are loosely arranged at varying heights, their slender stems and deep green leaves creating a gentle rhythm across the composition. With little indication of a distant horizon beyond the sweep of the field, the scene has a wonderfully open and tranquil quality.

Painted in an expressive modernist style, the artist favours suggestion over precise naturalistic detail. The simplified flowers and loosely defined landscape give the work a spontaneous character, while the generous expanse of sky lends a wonderful sense of light and space.

The palette is particularly appealing, pairing powder blue, pale grey, soft white and touches of blush in the sky with earthy browns, burnt orange and olive green across the meadow. The vivid cornflower and turquoise blues of the blossoms provide fresh, lively accents against these warmer tones.

Brushwork is loose, textured and visibly gestural, with areas of exposed canvas contributing to the painting’s character. Broad, sweeping strokes build the cloud-filled sky, while the meadow is worked more energetically with layered, broken marks and dry-brush passages. The flowers are picked out with confident dabs of blue and darker touches at their centres, giving them a delightful immediacy.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary gilt frame with a inner white border. Both the painting and frame aer in excellent vintage condition.
