Blossoms Over the Bay

A vibrant and lively mid century painting of a coastal village, painted in oil by the established Swedish artist Uno Vallman (1913-2004) whose works are included in the Swedish National Museum and The Swedish Modern Museum, to name a few. His works are also included in the collections of Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter, and the Tessin Institute in Paris.

The composition unfolds beneath an arch of oversized, blooming flowers, as though nature itself is framing the scene. Bright red houses cluster along a winding path that leads toward a small harbour, where boats rest gently at the shoreline. Figures move through the landscape, adding a quiet sense of daily life. The perspective feels intentionally playful, with scale shifting between foreground flora and the distant village, creating a dreamlike, almost storybook composition.

Executed in a distinctly mid-century modern, naïve style, the painting embraces simplified forms and a flattened perspective. There is a joyful, almost childlike immediacy in the way elements are arranged – bold outlines, decorative repetition, and a disregard for strict realism. The composition feels both spontaneous and carefully balanced.

The palette is vivid and uplifting. Bright reds dominate the houses and flowers, contrasted by fresh greens in the stems and landscape. The sky and water are rendered in soft, airy blues, while touches of yellow in the path bring warmth and movement through the composition. White accents in the flowers and shoreline add lightness and visual rhythm, preventing the bold colours from overwhelming the scene.

The brushwork is expressive and tactile, with visible, confident strokes that give the surface a lively texture. Paint is applied in a slightly impasto manner, particularly in the floral elements, where strokes feel rhythmic and almost decorative. Outlines are loose yet deliberate, enhancing the graphic quality while preserving a sense of spontaneity. The overall handling feels intuitive – celebrating colour and form over precision – imbuing the painting with warmth and charm.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary gilt frame with a stepped, ridged profile. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
