An evocative semi-abstract mid-century modernist interpretation of the Viaduct in Algeciras, Spain, painted in oil onto canvas by Swedish artist Eric Elfvén (1921–2008), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Jönköping Museum, Borås Art Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
Modernist in its ethos, the work takes on a reductionist, semi-abstract approach, and emphasises shape and composition over fine detail. Blocks of colour form a carefully balanced arrangement, where the solidity of forms meets the openness of sky and sea. The palette is composed of a mix of muted and earthy shades, creating a harmonious interplay between land, architecture, and atmosphere.
Brushstrokes are smooth and deliberate, with areas of subtly blended paint that enhance the sense of calm and space. Gentle tonal transitions and curved perspective lines draw the eye toward the horizon, giving the work a meditative quality.
This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary gilt frame. The painting has some scattered craquelure but the paint layer is very stable overall and in good condition.
