A charming and whimsical naïve style contemporary painting of a maritime scene, executed in oil onto panel by British artist Matt Rix.

A white beluga whale glides through rich blue waters, while above the horizon a tall sailing ship drifts beneath a soft pink sky dotted with small clouds.

Executed in a contemporary naïve style, the painting embraces clarity over realism. Perspective is intentionally flattened, proportions are stylised, and forms are reduced to their essential shapes. This simplicity enhances its whimsical, almost folkloric quality. The composition is clean and balanced, with strong horizontal divisions that give the work a calm, meditative rhythm.

The palette is bold yet harmonious: deep blues contrast beautifully with the warm rose-pink sky, while the pale whale stands out as the focal point. Brushwork appears smooth and controlled, with areas of flat, opaque colour that emphasise the graphic quality of the composition.

This oil on board is housed in a brown painted wood frame with an inner gilt window. Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.

British artist Matt Rix spent his childhood in South Africa and now lives with his family on a small holding in rural North Wales. His paintings are uncomplicated, modernist representations influenced by primitive and naïve folk art from times past. Many of the subjects Rix paints are inspired by the animals he sees from day to day. Rix uses recycled materials including discarded paints, boards, frames and backing paper. Much of his work is therefore produced using waste materials resulting in sustainable paintings that evoke a time-worn, nostalgic essence.
