Cubist Instruments

This painting is a vibrant and structured cubist-style still life, featuring a table densely packed with musical instruments and domestic objects, rendered in flattened geometric forms and bold, contrasting colours.

At the centre is a large guitar, overlapping with a mandolin or lute, both abstracted into simplified, stylized shapes. A pair of green glasses or vessels, a red beret, and a bottle or vase are also identifiable among the layered elements. The tablecloth is covered with various patterned fabrics, adding texture and complexity. Behind the scene, an open window reveals a bright blue sky with fluffy white clouds, bringing depth and a suggestion of an exterior world.

The overall palette combines warm earthy tones (browns, reds, and ochres) with cool blues and blacks, creating dynamic visual contrast. The artist uses strong outlines and flat planes to define the forms, typical of the cubist and synthetic cubist approaches influenced by Picasso and Braque.

This painting is lively and rhythmic, celebrating form and colour through a stylised representation of everyday objects in a domestic or café-like setting.

This large oil on canvas is presented in a stepped black wood frame with an inner pale blue slip, which suits it well. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has some surface wear and scuffing but is in a good and stable condition.
