A charming and engaging contemporary animal composition that captures the profile of a brown horse standing alertly against a softly undulating desert landscape, painted in a naïve style in oil onto panel by British artist Matt Rix.

The composition is striking in its simplicity – clean, stylised lines and minimal detailing reflect a naïve or folk art sensibility. The artist eschews realism in favour of flattened forms and a muted palette of chestnut brown, yellow, dusty lilac, and earthy taupe.

The horse’s form is rendered with smooth, confident brushstrokes and solid colour blocks, lending it a sense of quiet dignity and presence.

This oil on board is housed in bold and striking green frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.

British artist Matt Rix spent his childhood in South Africa and now lives with his family on a small holding in rural North Wales. His paintings are uncomplicated, modernist representations influenced by primitive and naïve folk art from times past. Many of the subjects Rix paints are inspired by the animals he sees from day to day. Rix uses recycled materials including discarded paints, boards, frames and backing paper. Much of his work is therefore produced using waste materials resulting in sustainable paintings that evoke a time-worn, nostalgic essence.
