Nude by Blue

A striking and wonderfully expressive mid century oil painting depicting a standing female nude, rendered in thick, confident brushstrokes and a rich, vibrant palette.

The figure stands slightly turned, her head tilted to one side, with her body painted in a beautiful mixture of warm pinks, soft creams, earthy browns and flashes of yellow and turquoise. Behind her, sweeping passages of brilliant blue, smoky grey and deep purple create a dramatic backdrop, while bold touches of red in the lower corner bring an unexpected burst of warmth.

What makes this painting particularly appealing is the artist’s wonderfully loose and instinctive approach to the human form. Rather than carefully defining every feature, the figure is built up through broad, energetic strokes of colour, with thick layers of paint giving the surface an almost sculptural quality. There’s a lovely contrast between the softness of the figure and the bold, expressive marks surrounding her.

We particularly love the way the artist uses colour to describe the body. Little flashes of blue, green and red appear amongst the warmer flesh tones, making the figure feel wonderfully alive. The elongated composition adds to its impact, drawing the eye upwards and giving the painting a strong, elegant presence.

Presented in a simple, narrow wooden frame that allows the artwork’s rich colours and wonderful texture to take centre stage. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.

A bold, characterful painting that would make a fantastic focal point in a room, particularly for anyone who appreciates expressive figurative art.
