A Day in the Woods

A wonderfully charming modernist landscape oil composition dated 1973, and painted by the established Swedish artist Ture Fabiansson (1910-1994), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, The Museum of Art in Gothenburg, Jönköping Museum, Borås Art Museum, and many others.

The composition depicts a figure in a vibrant orange coat accompanied by a faithful dog, wandering along a winding woodland path. A small stone bridge crosses a gently flowing stream in the foreground, while stylised trees and rolling greenery create a peaceful, almost dreamlike setting.

Painted in a distinctly modernist style, the composition embraces simplified forms, flattened perspectives and playful abstraction. The trees are rendered as bold, sculptural shapes, with their loosely suggested branches and foliage lending the scene a whimsical, almost storybook quality.

The colour palette is particularly delightful, with expansive areas of powder blue, soft buttery yellow, sage green and muted olive, punctuated by the striking burnt orange of the figure’s coat. Broad, expressive brushstrokes and loosely applied layers of paint create a beautifully textured yet understated surface, while the gentle interplay of colours brings warmth and movement to the composition.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary slim natural wood frame. There is a very tiny hole in the pale-coloured tree, but otherwise, the painting remains in very good overall vintage condition.
