The Young Pianist

A charming and expressive mid-century figurative painting depicting a young woman seated at a piano, absorbed in a quiet moment of music-making, executed in oil onto board.

Dressed in a soft sage-green dress, she sits in profile, her hands delicately poised over the piano keys, with an open sheet of music resting before her. The intimate composition captures a sense of stillness and concentration, offering a nostalgic glimpse into an everyday domestic scene.

The work balances expressive, loosely rendered brushstrokes with a thoughtful treatment of form and light. The artist employs broad, confident strokes to define the woman’s dress and the piano’s dark structure, while softer, more delicate applications of paint bring warmth and tenderness to her facial features and hands. Visible brushwork and areas of layered colour lend the composition a wonderful sense of texture and spontaneity.

The restrained palette is particularly appealing, featuring muted sage greens, pale mint, dusty blues, soft blush pinks and warm flesh tones, beautifully contrasted against the deep charcoal and near-black hues of the piano. Subtle touches of lavender and grey introduce depth, while the softly blended background enhances the painting’s tranquil, contemplative atmosphere.

This oil on board is housed in a characterful wood frame with a warm golden-brown finish and visible grain, and a inner linen-lined border. There is a small area of craquelure near the figure’s hair, but the paint layer is stable overall. There are some age-related spotting to the linen border, along with a small section of loss to the bottom right edge of the wooden frame as seen in the photos.
