The Red Interior

A wonderfully atmospheric mid-century interior, depicting a quietly furnished living space viewed through an open doorway, executed in oil onto board and dated 1963.

Three angular armchairs occupy the foreground, leading the eye towards a vivid red feature wall and a set of glazed doors beyond. A suspended ceiling light, small writing desk and scattered furnishings give the room a distinctly lived-in quality, while the unusual elongated composition heightens the sense of looking into a private domestic space.

The painting has a modernist character, with the interior simplified into loosely defined planes of colour and slightly distorted architectural forms. Perspective is treated expressively rather than precisely: doorways tilt gently, furniture is reduced to angular shapes, and outlines appear to shift and dissolve into the surrounding paint. This gives the work an intimate, spontaneous quality reminiscent of mid-century European interior painting.

The palette is particularly appealing, balancing chalky whites, pale blue-greys and soft creams with warmer browns, muted peach and mustard yellow. At the centre, the striking red wall provides a bold focal point, punctuated by smaller passages of blues. These stronger shades enliven what is otherwise a beautifully subdued, almost sun-bleached palette.

Paint has been applied with loose, visibly textured brushwork, with individual strokes remaining apparent throughout. Areas of colour are layered and scumbled rather than smoothly blended, allowing underlying tones to show through. The slightly sketch-like handling of the furniture and architectural details adds to the painting’s immediacy and charm.

This oil on board is presented in a complementary muted grey wood frame with in inner linen border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some scuffs.
