Green Pastures

A serene 20th century modernist style landscape painting, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1975.

The composition looks across broad stretches of cultivated farmland towards a small grouping of white farm buildings in the middle distance. Their crisp, pale facades stand out beautifully against the dense mass of dark green trees behind, while the open fields sweep diagonally through the foreground, creating a wonderful sense of depth and leading the eye towards the distant horizon.

Stylistically, the painting has a distinctly modernist, expressionistic character, with the landscape simplified into broad, flattened areas of colour rather than rendered in precise detail. The artist reduces the trees, fields and buildings to confident, almost geometric forms, giving the scene a strong graphic quality while retaining the peaceful atmosphere of the countryside.

The palette is wonderfully restrained and harmonious, dominated by sage, olive, lime and deep forest greens, offset by creamy whites, charcoal accents and a softly muted, pale grey-blue sky. The darker trees provide a dramatic visual anchor, while the brighter greens of the fields lend freshness and light to the composition.

Brushwork is loose, broad and expressive, particularly across the foreground where sweeping strokes loosely describe the contours and divisions of the fields. The trees are built from weighty blocks of pigment, while the architecture is more crisply defined, creating an appealing contrast between the organic landscape and angular forms of the buildings.

This oil on canvas is presented in a beautiful linen-lined frame with an inner and outer gilt border.  Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
