Skaters on the Pond

A charming naïve style mid-century winter scene depicting a frozen village pond animated by figures skating across its icy surface, executed in oil onto canvas.

The artist has reduced the landscape and its figures to simplified, expressive forms. Perspective is deliberately flattened, with elongated silhouettes and loosely rendered architecture lending the work a naïve, folk-art quality. The palette is beautifully restrained, dominated by icy turquoise, blue-green and muted teal, offset by snowy whites and deep charcoal blacks. Small passages of mustard yellow, lime green, burgundy and cobalt blue punctuate the scene, drawing the eye across the frozen landscape.

Brushwork is loose and textural throughout, with broad, softly blended strokes defining the ice and sky, contrasted by darker, more graphic marks in the trees and figures. Areas of visible texture and variation in the paint surface add to the work’s expressive, painterly character.

This oil on canvas is presented in a beautiful wide grey-toned wooden frame, with a pronounced dark wood-grain effect. The painting has some small areas of craquelure present, consistent with the age of the work, but the paint layer remains stable overall.
