Blue Interlude

A striking and beautifully textured mid-century abstract composition built around an interplay of cool colour, gestural movement and strongly defined forms, executed in oil onto canvas.

Broad passages of paint overlap and intersect across the surface, creating an energetic arrangement that feels spontaneous while retaining a considered sense of balance and structure.

The palette is dominated by powder blue, cornflower, cobalt and deep navy, softened by areas of pale sage, muted aqua and creamy blue-grey. Subtle touches of buttery yellow, lavender and coral pink provide warmth and contrast, particularly against the painting’s more saturated blues.

Paint is applied with confidence and immediacy. Broad, sweeping brushstrokes sit alongside shorter, heavily worked passages, with the direction of the brush remaining clearly visible throughout. Areas of thicker impasto lend the surface a wonderfully tactile quality, while overlapping strokes and partially obscured colours give the composition a sense of depth. Dark blue linear forms cut dynamically through the softer fields of colour, bringing rhythm and definition to the work.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary silver-grey wooden frame with a recessed black inner surround. The painting displays some craquelure consistent with the age of the work; however, the paint layer remains stable overall.
