Under the Pale Blue Sky

An evocative mid-century modernist figurative landscape painting, executed in oil onto canvas by the established Swedish artist Fabian Lundqvist (1913-1989), whose works have been represented in many public collections in Sweden.

The composition depicts a small gathering of figures beneath a rhythmic line of trees. The composition is anchored by a female figure in the foreground, dressed in vivid red clothing, while several more loosely defined figures recede into the distance. A brilliant white sun hangs in the expansive blue sky, lending the scene a dreamlike, almost timeless quality.

The painting has a distinctly modernist quality, with simplified forms, flattened perspective and an emphasis on shape and colour rather than naturalistic detail. The tall, umbrella-like trees create a strong structural rhythm across the canvas, while the widely spaced figures give the composition an appealing sense of stillness and gentle mystery.

The palette is particularly lovely, dominated by powdery sky blue, soft grey, muted mauve and dusty brown, punctuated by small areas of stronger colour. The foreground figure’s red clothing provides a warm focal point, complemented by touches of turquoise, deep blue and yellow among the distant figures. The near-white disc of the sun adds a graphic, almost surreal note against the uninterrupted blue.

Brushwork is soft and restrained. The sky and ground are rendered in thin, gently blended passages, while the tree canopies are built from layered, stippled strokes of mauve, grey and brown. Figures and trunks are treated more simply, with broad blocks of colour and minimal modelling, reinforcing the painting’s charming modernist character.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary slim silver-toned wood frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some scuffs.
