Boundaries in Blue

A large and striking abstract composition dated 1974 that is built from a series of broad, interlocking colour fields that shift and overlap across the picture plane, executed in oil onto canvas.

There is no fixed subject, yet the arrangement has an almost architectural or landscape-like quality, with forms appearing to advance, recede and intersect. A vivid horizontal passage of deep red provides a particularly strong focal point, cutting through the cooler expanses surrounding it.

The work reflects the language of mid-century geometric and colour-field abstraction, although its shapes are softened by irregular, gently curving edges rather than strict geometry. Large areas of powder blue, cornflower and deeper cobalt are balanced against cool greys and a warm, creamy yellow, with the single rich red form introducing a confident burst of contrast.

Paint has been applied with remarkable restraint. The surface is predominantly flat and matte, with little visible texture or gestural brushwork, allowing colour, proportion and shape to become the principal means of expression. Subtle variations within the painted fields retain a sense of the handmade and prevent the composition from feeling overly precise. The resulting work feels both bold and wonderfully composed.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary slender wood frame. The painting is in good vintage condition overall. There appears to be a slight water mark to the lower right-hand side of the painting, as shown.
