Between Two Worlds

An enigmatic composition that blends abstraction with a slightly surrealist sensibility, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1991.

Two abstracted figures occupy the lower edge of an ambiguous, dreamlike landscape, their forms incorporating collaged elements alongside painted passages. Sweeping areas of colour and curious floating forms fill the space around them, while arcing trails of golden dots travel across the composition, introducing a playful graphic quality and an intriguing sense of connection between the figures.

The unusual shifts in scale and perspective give the work an enigmatic, otherworldly character. The figures seem less grounded within a recognisable setting than suspended within an imagined world – perhaps observing, communicating or simply existing within the expansive abstract space around them.

The palette is fresh and luminous, dominated by powder blue, cobalt and cornflower blue, softened by pale mint, lemon yellow and creamy white. A vivid sweep of orange cuts horizontally through the lower composition, while earthy browns and charcoal tones lend weight and definition to the figures.

The artist employs a wonderfully varied mixed-media approach, combining broad gestural brushstrokes, translucent washes and dry-brushed passages with layered collage elements. Areas of exposed canvas weave add further texture, while the cut and overlapping surfaces within the figures create a fragmented, tactile quality. The dotted yellow lines provide a contrasting sense of precision, rhythm and movement against the otherwise loose and spontaneous handling.

Playful, dreamlike and enigmatic, the painting leaves its narrative deliberately unresolved, inviting the viewer to form their own interpretation of this curious encounter.
