Crossing Paths

A compelling mid-century abstract figurative oil composition, painted in 1958 by the established Swedish artist Ivar Morsing (1919-2009), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the National Museum in Stockholm, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Kalmar Museum, and Jönköping Museum.

The painting depicts a group of figures moving through an architectural setting. The composition feels almost cinematic, with overlapping bodies and angular planes suggesting a busy street, stairway or urban passage. Rather than describing the scene literally, the artist reduces both figures and surroundings into bold, simplified shapes, creating an intriguing interplay between people, space and structure.

The work has a distinctly modernist character, drawing on elements of Cubism and geometric abstraction. Forms are fragmented and compressed within the picture plane, while the figures are rendered with deliberately abbreviated features and strong, sculptural silhouettes. The closely grouped subjects give the scene a wonderful sense of movement and anonymity, capturing the rhythm of people passing one another.

The palette is beautifully restrained and earthy, dominated by deep chocolate brown, charcoal black, warm ochre, caramel and muted taupe, punctuated by passages of creamy white and pale beige. These lighter geometric areas bring contrast and structure to the darker figures, while touches of burnt red add warmth and depth.

Paint has been applied with expressive, visibly worked brushstrokes, with areas of dry, textured handling giving the surface a tactile quality. Broad, directional strokes reinforce the angular construction of the composition, while rougher passages and subtle variations in opacity lend the work a sense of immediacy. The combination of geometric structure and painterly texture gives this compelling piece both strength and atmosphere.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary linen-lined wood frame. The painting is in very good vintage condition, and the frame shows some slight wear consistent with age.
