The Pastel Room

Painted in a distinctly modernist style, the composition plays with flattened perspective and loosely defined geometry. Walls, furniture and floor overlap in shifting blocks of colour, creating a gently fragmented quality that brings rhythm and movement to an otherwise quiet scene.

The palette is particularly lovely, combining pastel shades of powdery blues, soft pinks and lilacs with muted sage and teal greens. Warmer notes of terracotta, ochre, rust and burgundy punctuate the cooler surroundings, while creamy whites lend lightness and balance.

Brushwork is confident and wonderfully visible throughout, with broad, directional strokes and areas of dry, textured paint. Rather than carefully modelling each object, the artist builds the interior through colour and gesture, giving the work a spontaneous, expressive quality.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary silver-grey toned wood frame with an inner linen border. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
