A charming contemporary naïve style painting, executed in oil onto panel by British artist Matt Rix.

A black ewe (named ‘Norma’ by the artist) stands calmly against a simplified countryside, framed by rolling green pasture, glowing yellow hills and a soft grey sky scattered with stylised clouds. With its gentle expression and sturdy silhouette, the animal becomes the quiet focal point of the composition, conveying a sense of contentment and innocence. The palette is restrained yet striking, contrasting the rich charcoal-black body of the sheep with warm ochre-yellow hills, muted sage-green grass and a softly graduated grey sky. Delicate touches of brown define the sheep’s face and legs, while the subtle golden tones in the landscape introduce warmth and optimism without overwhelming the composition.

Brushwork is smooth and deliberate, with carefully applied layers producing broad, even areas of colour and very little visible texture. Gentle tonal variation within the sheep’s coat and sky adds depth while maintaining the painting’s clean aesthetic.

This oil on board is housed in a black painted wooden frame with a gilt inner trim. Both the painting and frame are in excellent condition.

British artist Matt Rix spent his childhood in South Africa and now lives with his family on a small holding in rural North Wales. His paintings are uncomplicated, modernist representations influenced by primitive and naïve folk art from times past. Many of the subjects Rix paints are inspired by the animals he sees from day to day. Rix uses recycled materials including discarded paints, boards, frames and backing paper. Much of his work is therefore produced using waste materials resulting in sustainable paintings that evoke a time-worn, nostalgic essence.
