Severn Haze

A luminous and atmospheric landscape that captures the fleeting beauty of the Severn estuary through colour, light, and abstraction, executed in oil onto canvas.

Rather than describing the landscape in detail, the artist evokes its atmosphere. The painting seems to hover between observation and memory, where forms are softened and edges blurred by moisture in the air. This sense of haze is central to the work, lending it a dreamlike tranquillity and a feeling of vast open space.

The palette is especially striking. Cool aquatic blues and mint greens are balanced by touches of blush pink and buttery yellow, creating a gentle harmony that recalls the changing light of early morning or late afternoon. Loose brushwork and translucent layers allow colours to merge and glow, suggesting reflections, shifting weather, and the ever-changing character of the estuary landscape.

There is a strong sense of calm throughout the painting. The broad horizontal bands of land, water, and sky create a meditative rhythm, while the distant hill anchors the composition and gives it a  sense of permanence amid the shifting light.

This oil on canvas is framed in a custom floater frame. Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.
