Begonia & Apples

A very pleasant and meticulously painted mid-century still life that captures a potted begonia arranged beside a small plate of apples, set against a softly lit interior backdrop, and executed in oil onto board and dated 1949.

The composition feels intimate and unpretentious. An everyday moment elevated through careful observation and painterly sensitivity. The broad, rounded leaves of the begonia fan outward with a gentle rhythm, some tinged with warm russet reds, while delicate pink blossoms rise lightly above, adding a subtle vertical lift. To the right, some apples rest on a simple plate, grounding the composition and introducing a quiet sense of balance.

The painting leans toward a softened realism with expressive undertones. Forms are simplified yet thoughtfully modelled, with an emphasis on structure and tonal harmony rather than strict detail. The artist shows a clear sensitivity to light and volume, particularly in the way the leaves catch and diffuse illumination.

The palette is warm and inviting: earthy greens and olive tones dominate the foliage, contrasted by soft coral reds and blush pinks in the flowers. The pears introduce muted yellow-greens, while the tabletop in a warm, buttery yellow adds a gentle luminosity. The background shifts subtly between pale blue-grey and cream, creating depth without distraction.

Brushwork is confident yet restrained, with visible strokes that lend texture and vitality to the surface. The leaves are articulated with layered, directional strokes that suggest their waxy structure, while the pot and fruit are handled with slightly broader, more blended applications. Throughout, the paint is applied with a tactile quality , neither overly thick nor overly smooth, resulting in a balanced, expressive finish.

This oil on board is housed in a complementary wood frame, and subtle inner silver and champagne windows. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
