A beautiful and gentle mid-century modernist portrait, executed in oil.

The composition depicts a female figure in a green dress who has a book placed on her lap. Set against a blueish-grey background, she is sitting on a chair and is beside a brown desk.

Although an everyday scene, there is something alluring about the simplicity of the scene of which the artist has wonderfully captured.

All realistic details have been omitted, and the artist has simplified the composition down to painterly elements such as shape, form and colour. In addition to using a restrained soft colour palette, he has also intentionally left the canvas surrounding the female’s silhouette unpainted, adding character to the piece.

This oil on canvas laid on board is housed in a complementary gilt frame with an inner linen lining. The painting is in very good vintage condition. There are areas of scuff and paint loss across the frame, particularly at the right side.
