A large and very atmospheric mid century oil composition, painted in 1967.

Two boats sit quietly on the ice, a static but powerful image. The red and black of the boats contrast starkly against the white and light blue of the ice. Thickly applied layers of paint capture the robustness and depth of the winter ground. We can imagine the artist moving his paint brush in a dance across the surface, building up the layers slowly but surely.  Two thirds of the composition is dedicated purely to the white icy ground, giving us a sense of the expansiveness of the wintery landscape.

The painting is housed in a stunning wide profile frame with an inner gilt border that further illuminates the painting. Both painting and frame are in good vintage condition.
