The Mender

SOLD.

A beautiful mid century modern gouache portrait, painted in 1959 and framed behind glass.

This small but very well executed painting depicts a seated man, mending a net. There is a quiet sense of calm to this piece – the man sits casually on a simple box, focused on mending his net which he has propped on knee. There is something wholesome and comfortable about the scene, which the artist has captured beautifully.

The artist has painted this in a typically modernist style, focusing on the forms and colours of the scene rather than realistic details. The sitters surroundings are undiscernible, drawing our attention instead toward the form of the man and his net, the geometric lines of the box,  the patterns and colours of his clothes.

This gouache on paper is framed in its original wood frame, and is set behind glass. The gouache is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some minor marks and scuffs which do not detract from its overall attractiveness.
