Streets of Portugal
SOLD.
A charming and very well executed modernist street scene, painted in oil onto board and dated 1952.
Presenting a view of a street in Portugal, two figures that are each carrying a basket of goods on their heads are depicted crossing each other in opposite directions through a small alleyway.
Painted with a distinctly modernist ethos, the artist has used flat blocks of contrasting colours to create a sense of space and depth, beautifully composing an almost puzzle-like composition with different sized geometric shapes fitting together.
A rich and saturated colour palette that has been executed with expressive brushstrokes imbues the painting with liveliness, and hints of striking red outlines have been used across the various forms, adding a very unique touch to the painting.
This oil on board is housed in a complementary painted wooden frame with woven border. The painting and frame are both in excellent vintage condition.
Size: 55.5 x 39 cm (including frame)
