Silhouettes at Sea

A small and enigmatic mid-century composition, executed in oil onto board.

2 figures aboard a boat punctuate the foreground of the painting. The direction of the light obscures their details, creating silhouettes of their figures.

Behind them we see another sailing boat, as well as a big ship passing. The artist has focused on the forms of the composition, playfully using a varied series of shapes and the contrast of light and dark to create depth and a sense of space.

Lovely swirling brushstrokes capture the effect of the moving water, as well as the reflection of the water on the hull of the ship. A wonderful range of light pastel colours in soft hues of pale blue and delicate pink and yellow contrast against the dark silhouettes of the figures.

This oil on board is housed in a dark gilt frame. The painting is in very good vintage condition. There is some scuffing present to the frame corners, in keeping with its age.
