Quiet Fields

A calm mid-century composition that presents a serene, pared-back landscape where open fields stretch toward a low horizon line punctuated by a small cluster of distant farm buildings, executed in oil onto board and dated 1959.

A solitary structure – possibly a barn or haystack – anchors the composition, subtly drawing the eye while preserving the painting’s overall sense of stillness and space. The foreground is rendered in darker, earthy tones, gradually giving way to lighter, muted fields that lead into an expansive, softly washed sky.

Stylistically, the work leans toward minimalism and tonal abstraction, characteristic of mid-century landscape painting. The artist has simplified forms and reduces detail, allowing atmosphere and composition to take precedence over realism. This oil on board is housed a beautiful wood frame with a layered profile and an inner white border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some minor marks.
