A very endearing canine composition of a fox hound , painted in a naïve style in oil onto panel by British artist Matt Rix.

The dog stands alert on rolling green hills beneath a muted grey sky, its body a graceful mix of cream, black, and chestnut brown patches. A bright red collar adds a vivid accent, drawing the eye to the dog’s poised neck and steady stance.

The background is pared back and understated, with soft tonal gradients in the sky and simple green slopes that allow the dog to command the viewer’s full attention. The dog’s upright tail and keen gaze convey both energy and elegance, a balance of loyalty and readiness.

This oil on board is housed in an off white frame with inner gilt detailing. Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.

British artist Matt Rix spent his childhood in South Africa and now lives with his family on a small holding in rural North Wales. His paintings are uncomplicated, modernist representations influenced by primitive and naïve folk art from times past. Many of the subjects Rix paints are inspired by the animals he sees from day to day. Rix uses recycled materials including discarded paints, boards, frames and backing paper. Much of his work is therefore produced using waste materials resulting in sustainable paintings that evoke a time-worn, nostalgic essence.
