Fishing Boats
SOLD.
A heart warming and very well executed mid century modernist fishing village scene, painted in oil onto board, by the established female Swedish artist Brita Hansson (1918-1979).
A warm and earthy palette characterised by rich colours of orange, red and brown fill this modernist composition. 4 figures, including 2 young children, can be seen in the foreground. A standing figure carrying his or her baby punctuates the left side, and is a poignant mark of village life, where family, work and community are very much intertwined. Further into the painting we see a group of boats lining the top edge, alluding to the fact that fishing is the livelihood of this village. Using a combination of bold black outlines and planes of juxtaposing colours, the artist has achieved great depth and complexity to the composition, while maintaining a sense of playfulness and freedom within her palette.
This oil on board is housed in a very attractive slim wooden frame with inner gilt detail. There is some light craquelure to the lower edge of the painting as shown, but the paint layer is stable. The frame has some minor scuffs but overall is in good vintage condition.
