A large and striking mid century still life, painted in oil in 1946. Rich saturated colours in deep tones fill the canvas, with pops of yellow, red and green that draw our attention in ever closer. There is a loose sense of time, with the shadows and darkened tones suggesting an evening light and the closing of the day. A couple of art catalogues sit casually next to a slender vase, beckoning us to take a seat and have a browse. A lone apple lays separately from its group, adding a bold lime green punctuation to the overall composition. Modernist elements are certainly present in this painting, with the artist cleverly using colours and shapes to create depth and a sense of space. Bold lines, distinct and painterly brush marks, and juxtaposing colours make this painting a statement picture.
This oil is housed in its original mid century robust and heavy champagne gilt frame in a distressed style. The painting is in very good vintage condition. The frame has some losses to the inner slip and some general wear (as shown in the photos), but we think this adds to the overall charm of the piece.
